There's news for consumers who are shopping to upgrade their homes' heating and cooling systems. A well-known seal of approval has undergone a redesign.
After certifying the performance of more than 150,000,000 air conditioners, heat pumps and other heating and cooling components for homes and businesses for nearly 50 years, the Board of Directors of the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) has approved the redesign of its product performance certification seal.
The Institute's certification programs provide a sound engineering basis for rating the efficiency of HVACR equipment, allow product comparison that benefits manufacturers and consumers, and provide incentive to manufacturers to improve efficiency in order to gain market share.
Said William G. Sutton, ARI president, "The certification seal assures customers that the products they are buying--those used in homes, businesses, factories and all structures in between--will perform as claimed."
The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute is the trade association representing manufacturers of more than 90 percent of North American-produced central air-conditioning and commercial refrigeration equipment.
It has been administering its industry-directed voluntary programs since 1959, when ARI published its first product directory. With only 26 participants, the directory was only 19 pages and had only 600 products listed.
Today, it publishes an on-line version of its directories at www.ari.org/cert. The current listing has over 200 participants and over 150,000 products listed.

Boost Your Child's Vision
Vision problems often run in families, but there are some factors that you can control in your child’s environment to help their eyesight. Try these tips to give your child’s vision a better chance.
Brighten things up.
Unfortunately, your mom was right: reading in dim light can wreak havoc on your eyes. Buy your child a good reading light, or make sure that homework is done in plenty of natural light.
Give them space.
Place a pillow about eight feet away from the TV, and tell your child they have to watch it from that distance. Sitting too close to a television leads to the same focus problems that your child can develop from using computers and video games.
Take breaks.
Experts agree that kids’ increased computer use can cause focus problems, particularly the ability to refocus on objects far away. Take note of how much time they spend in front of the computer, and make sure they take a ten-minute break every hour.
Buy shades.
Your child may not need glasses, but it’s a good idea to buy them sunglasses. UV exposure can lead to macular degeneration or the early development of cataracts.
Don’t skip eye exams.
Children should be screened by an eye doctor or pediatrician between 6 and 12 months, 3 and 3 ½ years, at 5, and then annually after that.
It’s not too late for adults to start practicing these techniques, also. Make them a family habit, and you could slow the loss of your vision as you age. It’s important to set a good example for your children, too.

Vertical Platform Lifts in Homes
Vertical platform lifts are primarily used by individuals who use wheelchairs or mobility scooters. They are used to transport a mobility device and its rider up and down the stairs. They are often found in residential settings, but many businesses also use them. This includes places like churches and schools.
A vertical platform lift is designed to support the weight of a mobility device, such as a mobility scooter, and its rider. Most do not support less than 500 pounds and many can support as much as 750 pounds. In many cases a 2 people will ride the vertical platform lift at one time. This is common among husbands and wives, as well as caregivers. Some models are able to travel distances up to 12 feet.
Since most vertical platform lifts are intended for outside use they are water resistant and weather proof. Many also feature a battery backup to make sure that even if the power goes out that the device can still be used. If you intend to install the vertical platform lift in a public area or if you are worried about young children playing on it, it is a good idea to invest in a keyed lock. Most distributors can outfit the porch lifts with locks if they do not already come with one. They are controlled by use of either a set of call buttons or a remote control.

Cleaning Trends And Tips From The Pros
According to a recent survey, spring-cleaning is not just done during March or April.
More than 50 percent of those who responded to a recent cleaning trends survey conducted by Levolor Window Fashions said spring-cleaning can be-and is-done all year long.
The survey also discovered that quite a few people will happily pay someone else to spring-clean their homes.
The job is so resented that 33 percent of respondents say they are willing to pay someone else $50 to $100 to do it for them.
Cleaning window treatments is a very unpopular part of the job. More than 30 percent said this is their least favorite cleaning job.
If you are among the 30 percent of people who don't like cleaning their window treatments, here are some tips to help make the job easier:
• If you don't have a brush attachment to clean blinds, try wearing a pair of cotton mittens or socks and running them over your blinds.
• By tilting slats down on window blinds, but not closing, you'll be able to clean most of the top surface of each slat.
• Cellular shades can be cleaned with a feather duster.
• Faux wood blinds can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth.
• Make sure to test a small area when using water and detergent to clean fabric shades. Choose a spot that is not in main view.
• Wipe your blinds with a sheet of fabric softener after you've cleaned them. This will help prevent dust buildup for the next cleaning.
Your hard work will pay off when your blinds are dust-free and allergen-free and refreshed for another year.

Marriage or Divorce — Check Your Social Security Number
Newlyweds and the recently divorced should make sure that names on their tax returns match those registered with the Social Security Administration (SSA). A mismatch between a name on the tax return and a Social Security number (SSN) could unexpectedly increase a tax bill or reduce the size of any refund.
For newlyweds, the tax scenario can begin when the bride says "I do" and takes her husband's surname, but doesn't tell the SSA about the name change. If the couple files a joint tax return with her new name, the IRS computers will not be able to match the new name with the SSN. This could result in tax assessments or even an audit since the IRS may be under the impression that you are simply evading taxes.
Similarly, after a divorce, a woman who had taken her husband’s name and had made that change known to the SSA should contact the SSA if she reassumes a previous name. Failure to take this action can lead to audits. Can you imagine going through an audit with your former spouse?
It's easy to inform the SSA of a name change by filing Form SS-5 at a local SSA office. It usually takes two weeks to have the change verified. The form is available on the agency's Web site, www.ssa.gov, by calling toll free 1-800-772-1213 and at local offices. The SSA Web site provides the addresses of local offices.

Q. I'm in the market for a new wrought iron fence for my house; however, I don't want the maintenance that comes with it. Can you recommend alternative products that will help me achieve the traditional look of ornamental fencing?
A. I agree. Wrought iron fencing is beautiful, but the required maintenance keeps many homeowners from purchasing it. Fortunately, advancements in building materials are changing all that.
In particular, I'm thinking of an ornamental fence by CertainTeed Corporation called Bufftech™ Prestige™. It's a composite fence made of a blend of polypropylene plastic and fiberglass, which helps protect its matte black color from fading and captures the estate-style look you are seeking. You may also want to explore aluminum ornamental options; however, I prefer composite fencing over aluminum counterparts because composites are stronger and more durable.
When shopping for a low-maintenance fence, work with a reputable fence dealer and be sure to ask the right questions before purchasing. First, ask about which brands have proven to be the most reliable and come with solid warranties. Next, check for durability. After all, you want a fence that lasts as well as looks good. And, if you plan to use the fence as a pool surround, be sure it meets applicable pool safety codes. Finally, ask for testimonials. Speaking to another homeowner who has worked with your fence dealer and has had your chosen fence installed will help ensure your choice is the right one.

While choosing the contractor, it is better to keep these tips in mind. For example e you would have a better choice if you have three different quotes. Bath Lifts and You
If you or someone you love is mobility impaired, then taking a bath is likely not a very easy task. Unless you have a roll in shower, which can be very expensive, it can often be very hard to get into the bath tub without any help. If you are taking care of a family member, than bath time can be very hard on your back. If you are ready to regain your independence and privacy than a bath lift is right for you.
Bath lifts are incredibly easy to install, often they can be set up in just a few minutes. Utilizing a swivel chair, bath lifts are able to raise and lower an individual so that they can take and enjoy a nice bath. These devices can be operated by a single individual so it is now possible to reclaim your bathtub. The swivel chair makes it very easy to enter and exit the lift.
Depending on the unit it is possible to get a headrest or lap belts, which depending on the situation can be very helpful. Models that utilize batteries are designed to ensure that a proper charge is maintained. This way you never have to worry about not having enough power to lift out of the bathtub. These units will not lower you into the bathtub unless there is a sufficient charge to raise you back out.
Bath lifts allow you to take a bath by your self and are highly engineered to promote safety and reliability for many years. Rather than spending thousands and thousands on building a new handicapped accessible shower, you can spend a fraction of that on a new bath lift.

Keeping Kids Active This Summer
Experts say that kids need 60 minutes or more of physical activity a day. With childhood obesity on the rise, it’s even more important to keep our kids interested in sports. Keeping these tips in mind could help your children enjoy activity even more.
Let them lead the way.
Kids stay active when it’s fun for them, so try to keep it that way. Don’t force them to do any activity that they’re not comfortable with. If your child would rather play tag than swim, do it. You’ll both be moving, and having a great time.
Mix it up a bit.
Different sports are fun for different kids. Introducing your children to as many activities and sports as you can, will allow them to discover what they truly like.
Don’t keep score.
Pushing kids to excel could lessen their interest in certain activities. Forget about the score, and let them invent their own goals. The true measure of a successful season for any child is whether they want to play next year.
Remember to make sports a family affair. Your children will be more enthusiastic about physical activities if you lead by example. In the dog days of summer, try to devote an hour each evening to being active with your children. Turn off the television and have some quality fun!
